With the play The Award of Professor Vujadin Kostić, students of Primary School Sveti Vasilije Ostroški i Tvrdoški from Trebinje revived the spirit of school classrooms and strict professors from the 19th century.
The young performers met the expectations of a large audience, while the production also had a humanitarian purpose, raising funds for students who will go on a school excursion this year.
Inspired by the famous novel The Hat of Professor Kosta Vujić, the students of Trebinje used acting, costumes and strong messages to show that themes more than a century old still live among the young.
“I play the role of Professor Kosta Vujić. It was a great responsibility for all of us, but it was also very interesting to portray his methods of teaching, and I was very happy to bring that to the stage today,” said Ana Sparavalo, an eighth-grade student.
The adaptation and direction were done by Slađana Škrivan, teacher of Serb language and literature. Funds collected from the performance will be intended to support students ahead of the upcoming school excursion.
“The main message is to bring this work closer to the audience. That is our goal, and one of our wishes is also to help some of the students before the excursion,” Škrivan said.
The students worked on preparing the play for nearly half a year.
“Especially in the last month, rehearsals were very intensive. Alongside all our school obligations, we made time to come to rehearsals because we truly wanted everything to turn out well,” said Katarina Šakotić, also an eighth-grade student.
Thunderous applause from the audience proved that the school stage can be a place where knowledge, creativity and humanity successfully come together.
