Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić paid tribute to the victims of the 1995 attack on a convoy of Serbian refugees by laying flowers at the memorial site on Petrovačka Road, in the village of Janjila near Bosanski Petrovac.
The two leaders honoured the civilians who were killed on 7 August 1995, when a refugee convoy was struck during the military operation known as Operation Storm.
Dodik described the attack as a “cowardly crime”, stating that Croatian military aircraft targeted a convoy of civilians, including women, children, and elderly people.
“The refugee convoy had already left the territory of Croatia and was on the territory of Republika Srpska when it was bombed. Innocent civilians became legitimate targets,” Dodik said.
In a post on X, Dodik said the victims’ sacrifice obliges future generations to preserve the truth, remember those who were killed, and ensure they are never forgotten.
Vučić described the bombing as one of the most serious crimes committed against Serbian refugees during the conflict, adding that no one has been held accountable.
“Our obligation is to preserve the memory of this event and ensure that the children and elderly who were killed on Petrovačka Road are never forgotten,” Vučić said.
He noted that Serbia financed the construction of the memorial at the site and announced plans to build a chapel nearby in cooperation with the Serbian Orthodox Church, explaining that the original location is affected by plans for a future highway.
The memorial commemorates Serbian civilians killed when Croatian aircraft attacked a refugee convoy on Petrovačka Road during Operation Storm in August 1995.
