From Brazil to Banja Luka: Gabriela finds love across continents

What began as unanswered messages on social media eventually turned into a love story that crossed continents. Brazilian native Gabriela da Cruz Silva and Milan Mirković from Banja Luka recently celebrated their marriage after years of online acquaintance and a long-distance relationship between Brazil and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Years of unanswered messages

According to Gabriela, Milan first contacted her through Facebook in 2018 and later sent messages on Instagram, but she never replied.

“I occasionally saw his messages and compliments, but I never answered. To me, he was simply another person on social media,” Gabriela recalled.

One message changed everything

Everything changed in June 2024 when Milan sent a different kind of message.

“Instead of trying to attract my attention, he wished that God would help me through life’s challenges and bring me happiness. That message touched me deeply, and for the first time I decided to reply,” she said.

That conversation marked the beginning of their relationship.

Building a relationship across two continents

By early 2026, their communication had developed into a serious relationship despite the geographical distance between Brazil and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“We talked every day about our families, dreams, marriage and children. I realized that we shared the same values and life goals,” Gabriela explained.

What initially began as conversations while she practiced English soon grew into a strong emotional connection.

From Brazil to Bosnia and Herzegovina

Milan later travelled to Brazil, where he proposed to Gabriela. Afterward, the couple visited Paris before arriving in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Gabriela met his family.

She said she was warmly welcomed and soon decided to begin a new chapter of her life in Banja Luka.

Leaving Rio de Janeiro was not an easy decision, but she says it felt like the right one.

“I love Brazil and my family, but we wanted to build our life together. Safety was also an important factor,” Gabriela said.

Discovering a new home

Although she still misses her family, Brazilian beaches and fresh mangoes, Gabriela says she has embraced her new surroundings.

She is currently learning the local language while relying on English and translation apps in everyday communication.

Describing Banja Luka to people back home, Gabriela says it is a peaceful city surrounded by nature, where people have time for one another.

“It is a safe and welcoming place. People here have time to live, to talk and to truly be present with one another,” she concluded.
