Kostajnica will celebrate chestnuts, traditional cuisine, handicrafts, folklore and community gatherings from October 9 to 11 as the town hosts the latest edition of its traditional “Kestenijada” festival.
The tourism, cultural and economic event will once again offer a three-day program designed for visitors of all generations.
First held in 1998, Kestenijada was inspired by one of the area’s most distinctive natural resources — the sweet chestnut forests for which Kostajnica is widely known.
Chestnuts as a symbol of Kostajnica
Over nearly three decades, Kestenijada has developed into a recognizable local event combining gastronomy, tradition, culture and the promotion of Kostajnica as a tourist destination.
Roasting and tasting chestnuts will once again be among the highlights, with the distinctive aroma of roasted chestnuts expected to fill the town throughout the three-day festival.
The program begins on Friday, October 9, with an ethnographic exhibition of women’s handicrafts and an exhibition of artwork by students of Petar Mećava Elementary School.
The opening day will conclude with an “Evening of Folklore” in the main hall of the National Library.
Traditional stew, local dishes and live music
The main festival program is scheduled for Saturday, October 10.
An exhibition of souvenirs, handicrafts and honey will be held in the city park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
At noon, the “Kestenijada Cauldron” cooking competition will begin, with participants competing in the preparation of traditional paprikaš stew. An award will also be presented for the best-decorated table.
From 2 p.m., visitors will have an opportunity to taste and discover traditional dishes from the Kostajnica region, accompanied by live music.
The winners will be announced at 6 p.m., followed by the presentation of certificates and prizes.
Kestenbal for the youngest visitors
The program continues on Sunday, October 11, with another exhibition of souvenirs, handicrafts and honey.
At 2 p.m., students of Petar Mećava Elementary School and members of the Kestenko children’s club will take part in “Kestenbal,” featuring a parade and accompanying entertainment program.
Kestenijada 2026 will conclude with a screening of the humanitarian film “Svi za Kosmet – ma gde bili,” beginning at 7 p.m.
The event is organized by the Kostajnica Municipality Tourism Organization under the patronage of the Municipality of Kostajnica.
Kestenijada aims to promote the area’s distinctive natural and gastronomic heritage while further developing Kostajnica’s tourism offer.
