Očauš Cave: An unexplored natural treasure near Teslić

Located approximately 40 kilometers from Teslić, in the village of Očauš, Očauš Cave is one of the area’s lesser-known natural attractions. This spacious cave extends across two levels, with approximately 500 meters of passages explored so far.

The cave entrance is situated at an altitude of 973 meters above sea level, while the approach is steep and relatively challenging.

Although Očauš Cave has been surveyed and explored by experts on several occasions, a comprehensive exploration has never been completed.

Decades of speleological exploration

The first scientific investigations were conducted in 1971 by a team from the National Museum in Sarajevo.

Between 1983 and 1987, Čedomir Crnogorac, a geography teacher at a secondary school in Teslić, visited the cave several times with his students, carrying out various measurements.

The first more extensive surveys and explorations were conducted in 1997 and 1998 by the Ponir Speleological Society from Banja Luka.

Despite these efforts, much of the cave remains unexplored, leaving opportunities for further scientific investigation.

Untapped tourism potential

Although Očauš Cave has not been developed or equipped for organized tourist visits, it remains an interesting destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.

Combined with nearby hiking trails, traditional rural households in Očauš and the surrounding natural scenery, the cave forms part of the broader tourism offering of the Teslić municipality.

Its natural beauty, intriguing underground passages and relatively unexplored character make Očauš Cave a distinctive attraction with potential for further tourism development.
