Christian Schmidt is reportedly preparing to leave Bosnia and Herzegovina and could depart as early as next month.
Officials from Republika Srpska warn that Schmidt still has enough time to make one final move in favor of political Sarajevo and against Republika Srpska. Bosniak political representatives have openly called on him to impose a law on the distribution of so-called state property during what they describe as a legal vacuum.
Leaders in Republika Srpska responded that such a decision would effectively mark the end of Bosnia and Herzegovina as defined by the Dayton framework.
According to representatives of Republika Srpska, the only path toward easing political tensions would be the withdrawal of all decisions imposed by Schmidt, whom they continue to describe as illegitimate because his appointment was never confirmed by the United Nations Security Council.
They insist that any future High Representative must be formally approved by the Security Council, including the consent of Russia and China.
Officials also stated that Republika Srpska would not recognize a High Representative appointed solely by the Peace Implementation Council (PIC), just as it does not recognize Schmidt’s mandate.
