Goran Petronijević stated that the recent United Nations Security Council session on Bosnia and Herzegovina revealed, for the first time, an almost complete alignment between the world’s major powers — Russia, China, and the United States — regarding what he described as the illegitimacy of Christian Schmidt and the future of the Office of the High Representative (OHR).
Petronijević assessed that Russia’s presentation at the session was the most realistic, arguing that Russian representatives possess accurate information which they present before the Security Council, while China supported those positions.
He added that, for the first time, the United States did not deny those claims and in some areas — particularly regarding the future role of the OHR — came very close to the positions expressed by Russia and China.
“For the first time, perhaps in the last 30 years, we have a situation where some of the cards are finally aligning,” Petronijević said.
According to him, this different international approach toward Bosnia and Herzegovina could help establish a more functional political situation in the country, arguing that High Representatives, especially Schmidt, have created “general chaos.”
Petronijević also emphasized the importance of remarks made by Vasily Nebenzya during the Security Council debate regarding the prison conditions of Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić.
“I hope this will lead to better outcomes, that these prisoners, these elderly and ill men, will be allowed to come here for treatment so their suffering can at least be reduced in the final stage of their lives,” said Petronijević, who is also a member of Karadžić’s legal defense team.
Speaking about Mladić, Petronijević said he had learned the contents of an independent medical report commissioned by the international Mechanism, which allegedly confirmed earlier findings by Serbian and Dutch doctors that Mladić is in a terminal stage of illness.
“I learned that the findings of the medical commission formed by the Mechanism confirmed previous assessments regarding General Mladić’s health condition,” Petronijević said.
He added that, because of this, Mladić should be transferred from prison conditions to a medical institution in Serbia where he could receive proper care and where, according to him, his suffering in the final days of life could be alleviated.
