Republika Srpska has already established a position on the international stage by developing relations with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump while maintaining traditionally strong ties with the Russian Federation, according to participants in the RTRS political discussion program Another Perspective.
The discussion focused on Republika Srpska’s diplomatic activities and recent agreements between major world powers, which participants described as examples of how economic and strategic interests can overcome political differences.
Guests analyzed the diplomatic initiatives of Republika Srpska’s leadership and highlighted the importance of international partnerships that could create new opportunities and strengthen its position in global affairs.
Ana Trišić Babić, Director of the Republika Srpska Office for International Cooperation, emphasized the significance of Milorad Dodik’s diplomatic approach during a period of major geopolitical changes.
“We are very small in all of this. We are a small player, but personally, I feel a great sense of satisfaction and recognition. I believe we should all acknowledge Milorad Dodik’s contribution, as many already do, although some are unwilling to say so publicly,” Trišić Babić said.
She credited Dodik with shaping Republika Srpska’s international relations during a period of significant global changes beginning in 2022.
“He showed us how to navigate this period, from the beginning of what Russia calls the special military operation, and how to position Republika Srpska amid these truly tectonic shifts in world affairs,” she added.
Nina Sajić, a professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Banja Luka, explained that major powers do not necessarily need to agree on most international issues to reach agreements in areas of mutual interest.
“They have concrete interests that bring them to the negotiating table. I believe this is precisely such an example. We can call it whatever we want, but fundamentally, it reflects a certain imperial mindset in which major powers can afford to act pragmatically,” Sajić said.
She noted that Russia and the United States continue to disagree on numerous issues but have nevertheless managed to reach an agreement in this particular case.
“At this moment, the Russian Federation and the United States certainly have far more issues on which they disagree than those on which they agree. Yet they have managed to reach an agreement in this specific instance,” Sajić emphasized.
Career diplomat Željko Samardžija highlighted Republika Srpska’s role in the changing international environment.
“When it comes to Republika Srpska, we are certainly present. We may be small, but our role is significant, primarily because of what I would describe as a diplomatic triple jump by the Republika Srpska leadership,” Samardžija said.
He argued that Republika Srpska’s recent diplomatic activities represented a significant development compared with previous decades.
“They have achieved something in a short period that we have not seen in the past 25 years. Just a year or two ago, it would have been almost unimaginable for Republika Srpska to have this kind of relationship with the U.S. administration,” Samardžija concluded.
