Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the UN General Assembly in New York that Western policies were threatening the lives and well-being of millions of people, while also pressuring Serbia to accept the loss of Kosovo and abandon what he described as its own history.
Lavrov accused Western countries of increasingly resorting to force, acting unpredictably and pursuing policies that he said were destabilizing different parts of the world.
“The West’s policy of force and double standards is destabilizing the situation everywhere, while in the Balkans the EU is flagrantly ignoring UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and forcing Serbia to accept that it has lost Kosovo and to abandon its own history,” Lavrov said.
He also claimed that Western governments were pressuring Belgrade to impose sanctions on Russia in exchange for what he described as an illusory prospect of European integration.
At the same time, Lavrov addressed the situation in BiH, accusing Western countries of attempting to centralize the country at the expense of the constitutional position of Serbs.
“In an attempt to turn BiH into a unitary state, Serbs are being forced to give up the constitutional rights guaranteed to them by the Dayton Agreement and the UN Security Council,” Lavrov said.
He further argued that Western efforts to contain Russia had contributed to the destruction of the European security system.
Lavrov described Western countries as a “Western minority” that, in his view, had dominated global affairs for centuries by relying on the resources of others and was now attempting to preserve its privileges and impose its own rules on the rest of the world.
He also recalled an earlier statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that “the dictatorship of a single hegemon has spun out of control and has become simply dangerous for everyone around it.”
Lavrov went on to accuse the political leadership of a number of European Union countries of embracing extremist and Russophobic ideas and tolerating the glorification of figures whom Russia considers Nazi collaborators and war criminals.
“The ruling elites of many European Union countries, judging by the statements of their representatives, are clearly infected with the virus of racial superiority. They nurture extremist and Russophobic ideas and indulge the leaders of the Ukrainian regime when notorious war criminals and Hitler collaborators are honored in Kyiv, people whose hands are stained with the blood of Russians, Jews, Belarusians, Ukrainians and members of other nationalities,” Lavrov said.
He also criticized Western countries for voting against a Russian-sponsored UN resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism.
“I would like to emphasize that the results of the Second World War form the foundation of the post-war world order and are enshrined in the UN Charter,” Lavrov concluded.
