Ošap Gaćanović: Bećirović wants a confrontation with Republika Srpska and the Serb Orthodox Church; no one can change the Serb identity

On Tuesday, 7 July, deputies in the National Assembly of Republika Srpska will decide on the veto lodged by Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željka Cvijanović against the decision on the appointment of members of the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Cvijanović assessed the decision to return foreign members to the Commission, adopted by outvoting, as destructive to the national interest.

Anđelina Ošap Gaćanović, a member of the Commission from Republika Srpska, said there were several motives behind the actions of Bosniak member of the Presidency Denis Bećirović.

“It is a confrontation with Republika Srpska and with the Serbian Orthodox Church. All the problems in the Commission are the result of Bećirović’s attempts,” Ošap Gaćanović said.

She added that Bećirović was trying to alter the Dayton Peace Agreement.

“He is targeting the property of Republika Srpska and the Serbian Orthodox Church,” Ošap Gaćanović said.

She stressed that the Commission adapts to the legislation adopted in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Bećirović naively approached this by trying to change an institution that adjusts to laws. He wants to prevent Republika Srpska from blocking harmful decisions,” she explained.

She also underlined that there are identity-based and ideological motives behind the move.

“The goal of this Commission was to contribute to reconciliation. But we are seeing abuse by the Bosniak side. They used to say that the Serb and Croat identities must be dissolved into some Bosnia and Herzegovina identity. As a member of the Commission, I stopped that, because no one can merge the identity and property of the Serb people into some new identity or new property,” Ošap Gaćanović said.

She pointed out that the Commission has neither legislative nor executive powers.

“Everything falls under the jurisdiction of the entities and the relevant ministries,” Ošap Gaćanović said.

She called on all deputies in the National Assembly of Republika Srpska to support the veto of Serb member of the Presidency Željka Cvijanović.
