The President of the Association Creators of Republika Srpska, Stevan Medić, said that February 28, 1992—the day the first Constitution of Srpska was adopted—is a date of historic importance and a holiday of the Serb people.
He stressed that the adoption of the Constitution 34 years ago laid the foundation for all subsequent laws and normative acts, adding that it was a democratic constitution that enabled the building of institutions and a legal system.
“With that Constitution and the complete normative framework, we went to Dayton, where we were accepted as a party to the negotiations—effectively as an independent state. However, due to the agreements at the time and the circumstances that led to the sidelining of the Dayton Peace Agreement, what we ultimately received was the entity of Republika Srpska,” Medić said in Pale after a session of the Association’s Assembly.
He added that the creators of Republika Srpska remain today on the front line of defending and preserving Srpska and its constitutional position, striving to preserve the memory of the period from 1991 until the marginalization of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
Medić noted that the decisions adopted on February 28, 1992 were not easy, but were made in an atmosphere of unity and responsibility.
Speaking about the political leadership of the time, Medić recalled the roles of Momčilo Krajišnik, Radovan Karadžić, Nikola Koljević, and other officials who shaped the policies of Republika Srpska during that period.
Medić emphasized that the creators of Republika Srpska are proud of the period in which the foundations of its institutions were laid.
The Assembly session of the Association, held to mark 34 years since the proclamation of the first Constitution of Republika Srpska, was attended, among others, by Milorad Dodik and Staša Košarac.
