Stevandić and Petrov: First visit by Republika Srpska official to Constitutional Court of Serbia

Republika Srpska National Assembly Speaker Nenad Stevandić met today in Belgrade with President of the Constitutional Court of Serbia Vladan Petrov, his deputy Ranka Vujović and Constitutional Court judge Nikola Banjac to discuss strengthening institutional cooperation.

Following the meeting, Stevandić thanked his hosts and said this was the first visit by a Republika Srpska official to the Constitutional Court of Serbia.

“We are announcing a better period ahead, with joint sessions and meetings between the constitutional courts of Serbia and Republika Srpska. We cooperate in areas that safeguard historical, democratic and legal values. I hope that cooperation between Serbia and Republika Srpska will become even better and more successful every day. This is not directed against any individual or nation, but represents a contribution to overall regional peace and stability, respect for human rights, rights enshrined in the UN Charter and the rights of every person, regardless of their nationality. Our Serbian people should enjoy these rights just as other peoples do,” Stevandić said.

Petrov said he was extremely pleased, both institutionally and personally, that the Constitutional Court of Serbia had been visited by the Speaker of the Republika Srpska National Assembly.

“Today, representatives of two institutions embodying two forms of sovereignty, ultimately united as one, met here. These are popular sovereignty and constitutional sovereignty. We discussed strengthening institutional cooperation, which unfortunately has not been sufficiently developed between the two constitutional courts in the past. I would also like to thank Stevandić for supporting our initiative and helping and participating in preparations for the Constitutional Court of Serbia and the Constitutional Court of Republika Srpska to hold their historic first special joint session on September 14 in Sremski Karlovci,” Petrov said.

He expressed hope that such meetings would become a tradition.

“I would like and hope to see more meetings of this kind and for them to acquire institutional and even traditional significance. In any case, they should help establish continuity in state-building, institutional, national and democratic activities, always with a reconciliatory approach in our region,” Petrov concluded.
