German historian wrote to Scholz: Serbs are not a genocidal people

Historian, analyst, and reserve lieutenant colonel in the German army Mark Stefan Peters emphasized in a letter to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that Serbs are not a genocidal people and that the UN General Assembly should not adopt a resolution on Srebrenica.

Peters highlighted that there are strong reasons not to adopt such a document, taking into account the undisputed fact that Serbs are not a genocidal people, as well as the potential escalation that could be triggered, reports “Večernje novosti.”

Regarding the resolution that proposes the declaration of an “International Day of Remembrance for the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995,” sponsored by Germany and Rwanda, Peters wrote to Scholz stating that Srebrenica was essentially a crime, which he condemns as he does any other.

He pointed out that the International Court of Justice had already addressed this event in 2007, providing a strong signal to the victims.

  • I want to highlight the potential for escalation related to the possible adoption of the UN resolution in its current form, as indicated by the statements of the President of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik, who hinted at the possibility of declaring its independence, thus leading to the dissolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina – Peters noted.

He also pointed to the warning from Serbia Foreign Minister Marko Đurić, who requested that the sponsors of the resolution withdraw the proposal to avoid deepening issues in an already sensitive region.

Peters explained to “Večernje novosti” that due to all the reasons mentioned, as well as the already emphasized fact that Serbs are not a genocidal people, he wants to recommend to the German government and German voters that there are strong reasons against adopting the proposed resolution in its current form at the UN General Assembly.
