Young Banja Luka filmmaker Nikola Krulj writes, directs, and wins international film awards

Film, animation, experimental cinema, and visual art all form part of the creative world of young Banja Luka filmmaker Nikola Krulj, whose work transcends traditional artistic boundaries.

Krulj believes that art is often at its most powerful when it does not provide ready-made answers but instead encourages audiences to pause, reflect, and search for their own interpretations. Following that philosophy, he writes, directs, and edits his own films, which have been screened at international festivals and received numerous awards.

His works explore themes such as identity, freedom, human perception, and the need to break free from conventional frameworks. Speaking on RTRS’s morning programme, Krulj discussed the challenges young filmmakers face in developing their own artistic language and explained how approaching cinema from a different perspective can open new creative possibilities.

His short film The Hammer received the Audience Award at a film festival in London, while Fly High Mono won the award for Best Student Film at the Ohrid Film Festival.

Krulj’s films have also been selected for festivals in New York, Prague, Tirana, and Oslo, further highlighting the growing international recognition of his work.
