US policy shift in the Balkans confirmed by State Department report

Strengthening local actors to resolve challenges independently, instead of relying excessively on international intervention or supervision, is clearly outlined in the latest report on United States policy toward the Western Balkans published by the U.S. State Department.

The document states that the era of U.S.-led nation-building is over, emphasizing a new approach based on dialogue, local responsibility and economic cooperation rather than imposed political solutions.

According to the report, Washington now seeks to support domestic institutions and political representatives in reaching agreements on their own, while focusing American engagement on areas where U.S. strategic and economic interests can be advanced.

Political analysts in Republika Srpska interpret the document as confirmation of broader geopolitical changes and a gradual reduction of international interventionism in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

At the same time, officials from Republika Srpska continue to advocate for the closure of the Office of the High Representative (OHR), arguing that the country’s future should be shaped through direct dialogue between domestic political actors, without foreign supervision or imposed decisions.

The proposed Declaration before the National Assembly of Republika Srpska calls for the closure of the OHR, annulment of decisions imposed by Christian Schmidt and Valentin Inzko, and the restoration of competencies transferred from the entities to the state level outside the constitutional framework.

The document also reiterates Republika Srpska’s commitment to the Dayton Peace Agreement and calls for direct political dialogue between Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina without external mediation.
