Schmidt confirms he will resign in interview with German daily

Christian Schmidt has announced that he intends to step down from his position in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He informed the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in advance about his decision to resign.

“After nearly five years, Schmidt has personally decided to conclude his service in implementing the peace process in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the Office of the High Representative stated in a message sent to the newspaper.

According to the report, Schmidt also emphasized that he will continue to perform his duties until a successor is appointed.

The role of High Representative has existed since the end of the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which claimed more than 100,000 lives and displaced millions. The position is tasked with overseeing the post-war order and ensuring the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement.

Speculation about Schmidt’s departure has been circulating in diplomatic circles and media in Sarajevo for some time. According to the German outlet, if the transition occurs, it may not be entirely voluntary nor take place at a time of Schmidt’s choosing.

The report further claims that United States has increasingly pressured Schmidt to step down, allegedly seeking a more compliant successor.

Schmidt is expected to present his regular six-month report on Bosnia and Herzegovina before the United Nations Security Council in New York on May 12. According to a draft circulated among Western diplomatic missions, he warns of a potential institutional crisis and “destruction” of the state.

Some media in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina also report that Schmidt may formally announce his resignation during the session. They note that he has already held meetings in New York, including with U.S. representatives, and that he is under increasing pressure.

According to those reports, Schmidt has informed close associates and the Peace Implementation Council Steering Board about his intention to step down.
