Crnković: Croatia’s plan to store nuclear waste at Trgovska Gora is a disaster in the making

Mario Crnković said Croatia’s plan to store nuclear waste at Trgovska Gora represents a disaster in the making, especially in the year marking four decades since the Chernobyl disaster.

Crnković, head of Green Team Novi Grad, said that just as the catastrophe at Chernobyl was initially ignored, there are now attempts to ignore the fact that an EU member state is pushing radioactive and other hazardous waste to the border with a neighboring country.

He argued that the chosen site is inadequate and unacceptable, adding that even if the location met technical standards, it would still be unreasonable to ignore the neighboring state and local communities.

Crnković said some lessons have been learned since Chernobyl, particularly regarding nuclear reactor design, but that lessons about responsibility remain largely unfulfilled. He described the Trgovska Gora dispute as a clear example.

He also criticized narratives portraying the project as a development opportunity for Dvor, saying nearby communities in Novi Grad and across the Krajina region—from Bihać to Velika Kladuša and the valleys of the Una River and Sana River—would bear potential consequences despite receiving no benefits from nuclear energy production.

He said the issue is not electricity consumers, but poor decisions and interest groups willing to endanger communities for profit.

Croatia plans to store radioactive waste from Krško Nuclear Power Plant, along with existing institutional radioactive waste, at the Trgovska Gora site in the municipality of Dvor, directly near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
