Serbs and Russians marked the Day of Remembrance for genocide victims on the same day

Serbia and Russia marked the Day of Remembrance for genocide victims on the same day, April 19, 2026. This first observance of Russia’s Day of Remembrance, established by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin, coincided with the Serb tradition of remembering the victims of the Ustasha genocide, sending a symbolic message to the world.

Through statements by senior officials of Russia and Serbia, determination was emphasized to defend historical truth and prevent revisionism regarding the outcomes of the Second World War, with the conclusion that a brotherly alliance is key to preventing new crimes against humanity.

Based on Putin’s decree from December last year, Russia this year marked for the first time the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the genocide of the Soviet people, observed on April 19 — the date of the 1943 decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR “on measures for punishing German-fascist criminals responsible for the killings and torture of Soviet civilians and wounded Red Army soldiers, as well as spies and traitors to the homeland,” according to Bratstvo.
