Security expert Slobodan Župljanin assessed that the security situation in Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina is stable, but requires heightened precautionary measures.
“The security situation in Republika Srpska is satisfactorily stable, yet at the same time challenging in light of the current conflict in the Middle East. Any security incident in the region would significantly endanger the safety of everyone in the Balkans,” Župljanin told Srna.
According to him, visible security challenges and risks are present, though for now without a direct threat.
“All security actors must invest major efforts to prevent these challenges and risks from escalating into a direct security threat, as that would become extremely dangerous for the entire Balkans,” he stressed.
Župljanin recalled that a number of individuals from Bosnia and Herzegovina have been linked to extremist Islamist groups in the Middle East, and that some of them have participated in terrorist acts in BiH as well as across Europe and the world.
“Terrorists operate from the shadows, without announcement and unexpectedly. That is why the security forces in Republika Srpska are fully justified in raising security measures to a higher level, in line with threat assessments concerning persons and facilities,” he said.
He pointed to previously observed hostility toward Jews and Israel in BiH, arguing that this creates an obligation for the Ministry of Interior of Republika Srpska to strengthen protection of facilities used by Jewish communities, including the Jewish Cultural Center in Banja Luka.
Župljanin also noted the close relations between Republika Srpska and Israel, adding that this further underscores the need for vigilance.
He mentioned the broader regional dimension, highlighting that the largest U.S. military base in the Balkans, Camp Bondsteel, located in Kosovo and Metohija, could theoretically become a target in the event of escalation between the United States, Israel, and Iran.
He concluded that special responsibility also lies with security structures at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federation of BiH, noting that previous security threats have originated there and that certain extremist links have been associated with BiH in the past.
