“Nada Radovan Tomanic (51), originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, was arrested yesterday on charges of allegedly lying about her war-time past to obtain American citizenship.

According to US media reports, she is accused of mistreating Serbian prisoners during the war and skillfully avoiding mentioning her war history in her application for American citizenship.

Nada Radovan Tomanic faces charges on two counts of illegally obtaining US citizenship. If convicted, her citizenship might be revoked, and for each of the two counts, she could face up to 10 years in prison.

As reported by American media, investigators discovered that Tomanic, residing in Morgantown, West Virginia, was a member of the Zulfikar Special Unit, known for its crimes in the village of Trusina.

The indictment against Tomanic alleges that she physically and mentally abused Serbian prisoners. She concealed all these facts during her naturalization process in the US.

“The indictment states that on multiple occasions, she lied about her past, which involved human rights violations, all to become an American citizen. I thank our partners in this investigation, both here and in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who helped us achieve justice despite the passage of so much time,” said Vanessa Roberts Avery, the American district attorney.

The indictment specifies that Tomanic participated in the abuse of prisoners alongside other members of the Zulfikar unit, beating prisoners with batons and rifles and kicking them with military boots.

In 1997, Tomanic applied for refugee status in the US, which was granted. Three years later, she applied for permanent residency, and in 2012, she became a US citizen.”
