Stevandić meets Kövér in Hungary: Republika Srpska launches diplomatic campaign over political persecution

President of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, Dr. Nenad Stevandić, met today in Budapest with the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, László Kövér, to whom he handed a letter expressing serious concern over the politically motivated persecution of Republika Srpska officials, grounded in the abuse of judicial mechanisms and the unconstitutional actions of Christian Schmidt.

“Following discussions in Belgrade and briefing the Speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, on the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we have launched a diplomatic campaign to convey the truth about Republika Srpska by informing parliamentary leaders across the EU and other relevant countries about the challenges we face,” Stevandić stated.

In the letter submitted to Kövér, Stevandić emphasized that Christian Schmidt’s actions are illegitimate and represent a blatant violation of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s constitutional order.

“Although Schmidt was never appointed by the UN Security Council, he has assumed powers that do not belong to him, unilaterally amending laws and bypassing parliamentary procedures. This has directly contributed to the ongoing crisis in BiH,” Stevandić warned.

He reiterated that Republika Srpska remains committed to dialogue and political agreements, and will continue to highlight the true causes of the crisis on the international stage, which stem from Schmidt’s unconstitutional conduct.

“Schmidt has abused the role of High Representative in BiH, contrary to both the UN Security Council’s decisions—having never confirmed his appointment—and European legal practices, judicial standards, and democratic principles,” Stevandić said.

He pointed out that Republika Srpska does not threaten anyone, but rather advocates for equality of all peoples and entities, as stipulated by the Dayton Peace Agreement.

“It is both paradoxical and hypocritical that Srpska officials are being investigated and prosecuted for defending the principle of equality. The Speaker of Parliament is under suspicion simply for convening and presiding over sessions of the Assembly and its collegium—his constitutional duty. Such accusations would be unimaginable in any serious country. Even the constitutionally defined request for protection through immunity has gone unanswered,” Stevandić stated.

He announced continued efforts to present the full picture of the situation in BiH to the international community—through letters, official briefings, and direct contacts.

“Republika Srpska insists on peace, equality, and the rights of all constituent peoples. We will not accept discrimination or political persecution. We will continue to inform international partners and institutions because only truth and dialogue can preserve peace and stability in BiH,” concluded Stevandić.
