Hunter rescues dog from 70-meter-deep cave in Republika Srpska

A dramatic rescue operation in the municipality of Ribnik, Republika Srpska, ended successfully after a brave hunter descended into a 70-meter-deep cave to save a hunting dog named Astor. The three-hour operation brought together hunters, firefighters and local volunteers determined to rescue the trapped animal.

Milorad Smiljanić, head of the Ribnik hunting section, descended into the cave near Vučija Poljana after the dog fell into a deep pit.

Aleksandar Vrtunić, a member of the Ribnik Hunting Association, told SRNA that the call for help immediately mobilized the local community.

“Friends called me asking for help rescuing Astor, a hunting dog that had fallen into a deep cave. When we arrived at the scene and inspected the pit, we noticed that the first 15 meters had only a gentle slope, after which the ground dropped sharply into a vertical shaft leading straight to the bottom, where the dog was trapped in darkness and cold,” Vrtunić explained.

A dangerous rescue operation

More than 10 people joined the rescue effort, but the dangerous conditions made it difficult for anyone to descend into the cave. Rocks were constantly falling, creating an additional risk for the rescuers.

The Ribnik Fire Department arrived at the scene and provided essential equipment, including a vehicle equipped with a winch.

“The Ribnik Fire Department came to our aid and provided equipment that saved the day. A vehicle equipped with a winch became our lifeline,” Vrtunić said.

Despite the danger, Smiljanić volunteered to descend into the pit and rescue the trapped dog.

“With this act, he showed that hunting is not just a hobby, but also a love for animals and every living creature,” Vrtunić emphasized.

Three hours of courage and teamwork

The rescue operation lasted three hours, with hunters, firefighters and volunteers working together under difficult weather conditions.

Vrtunić also highlighted the remarkable contribution of a young boy, Uroš Davidović, who actively assisted the rescue team.

According to Vrtunić, the boy worked with the dedication of an experienced rescuer, bringing tools, ropes and other necessary equipment to help ensure the operation’s success.

“The dog rescue operation lasted three hours, which felt like an eternity to everyone involved,” Vrtunić said.

He expressed gratitude to everyone who participated in the rescue, emphasizing that the successful operation demonstrated the importance of courage, solidarity and compassion for animals.

The dramatic rescue ultimately ended with Astor being brought to safety, turning a potentially tragic incident into a heartwarming story of determination and teamwork.
