Today marks the Day of Serb Unity, Freedom and the National Flag, a holiday established to celebrate the unity of the Serb people and their national symbols, while also commemorating the breakthrough of the Salonica Front during World War I.
The central ceremony marking the Day of Serb Unity, Freedom and the National Flag, organized by the governments of Republika Srpska and Serbia, was held last night in Banja Luka in the presence of officials from Republika Srpska and Serbia.
Milorad Dodik said that Serbs do not build their identity on hatred toward others, but on love for their own people. He recalled that throughout history, the Serb people fought to preserve their families, patron saint traditions, church, script and freedom, refusing to submit to others.
Serbian Prime Minister Đuro Macut said that Serbia would always stand alongside Republika Srpska, adding that the joint celebration was the best way to demonstrate Serb unity.
“Freedom is the word that drives us and is an essential part of the being of the Serb people,” Republika Srpska Prime Minister Savo Minić said.
He added that by jointly commemorating the holiday, Republika Srpska and Serbia demonstrate that they constitute a single homeland space which, he said, has historically been divided by administrative borders.
Serbian Patriarch Porfirije said he felt deeply blessed that people had gathered to demonstrate their unity.
“We have gathered to show that we are one – one people, one faith and one church,” Patriarch Porfirije said.
