The documentary film “Children of Bradina” by Stevan Salatić will be screened in Andrićgrad on Saturday, September 12, presenting testimonies about the suffering of Serbs in Bradina near Konjic and the wider area of the municipality during 1992.
Salatić described the documentary as an emotional and harrowing account told by people who were children when they witnessed the events in the village in May 1992.
“Bradina is a village that essentially no longer exists. It was burned to the ground twice in 1992, in May and July. A third of its male population lost their lives, while women, children and surviving men were detained and endured terrible suffering,” Salatić told Srna.
He said Bradina once had around 800 residents, while today only one Serb resident lives in the village.
“The film also deals with the suffering of Serbs in the wider Konjic area, as well as the events at the Čelebići prison camp, where Serbs were imprisoned, tortured, killed and dehumanized during 1992,” Salatić said.
According to him, the documentary will resonate with those who were forced to flee their homes during the wars of the 1990s, lost close family members, homes and roots, and had to rebuild their lives in new surroundings.
“Bradina, as a symbol of Serb suffering in Herzegovina, deserves to be written about, filmed and discussed,” Salatić emphasized.
He added that the surviving residents of the village are now dispersed, mostly living abroad, as well as in Trebinje, Gacko, Višegrad, East Sarajevo, Bratunac and Bijeljina.
“There they preserve the memory of those who lost their lives and do not forget the roots that Muslim-Croat forces attempted to completely eradicate in the spring of 1992,” Salatić said.
He stressed that Bradina’s story should continue to be told in order to preserve the memory of the victims through a culture of remembrance, and invited residents of Višegrad to attend the screening.
The screening will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the Dolly Bell Cinema in Andrićgrad.
