US institutions have sent a request for agrément for Ronald Johnson, who is expected to become the new US ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to Avaz.
Johnson comes from a military background and is an expert in international security. The move follows a report by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirming his professional qualifications for the position.
In diplomatic practice, agrément represents the receiving country’s approval of a proposed ambassador. If a candidate is considered unacceptable, the receiving country may decline to provide its consent, although such situations are relatively rare.
Johnson began his military career with the US Marine Corps in 1980 and participated in numerous international missions. He served as a UN observer in Lebanon and the Sinai and took part in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the Gulf War.
He also participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom and was involved in the evacuation of US citizens from Beirut.
Johnson retired from military service 16 years ago and subsequently founded the consulting company Mares Associates LLC, which works with partner countries in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and South America.
According to available information, Johnson has not previously held a position in the Western Balkans, and the post in Bosnia and Herzegovina would be his first ambassadorial assignment. His extensive experience working in crisis regions is considered one of his key qualifications.
Since September last year, John Ginkel has served as chargé d’affaires with the full authority of an ambassador. From the beginning of his tenure, it was expected that he would remain in the position for approximately one year, until the appointment of a new US ambassador.
Unless there are significant changes in the appointment process, Johnson is expected to succeed Ginkel as the next US ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
