An initiative by five members of the U.S. House of Representatives to designate February as Serbian-American Heritage Month has been welcomed as an important step toward recognising the historical, cultural, and civic contributions of the Serbian-American community in the United States.
If approved by Congress, the resolution would establish an annual observance dedicated to celebrating Serbian heritage through educational, cultural, and public events across the country.
The proposal recognises the contributions of Serbian Americans to the development of the United States and highlights the longstanding alliance between the two nations during the World Wars, the achievements of renowned Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla, and Operation Halyard, one of the largest rescue missions of Allied airmen during the Second World War.
“For generations, Serbian Americans have helped shape our nation and strengthen the ties between the United States and Serbia. This resolution recognises their history, heritage, and lasting contributions,” said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, one of the sponsors of the measure.
Serbia’s Ambassador to the United States, Dragan Šutanovac, described the initiative as the result of sustained diplomatic engagement and said it comes during a month of significant developments in bilateral relations.
“For the first time in 145 years of diplomatic relations, Serbia and the United States have launched a strategic dialogue, creating a platform for the highest level of strategic cooperation. This month we also signed the Artemis Agreement with NASA, and now Serbian Americans have the opportunity to gain official recognition through a dedicated heritage month,” Šutanovac said.
Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik also welcomed the initiative, describing it as a confirmation of the historic alliance between the Serbian and American peoples.
“The historic alliance, forged during the most difficult periods of the twentieth century, remains an important foundation for stability in the Balkans and a basis for understanding, cooperation, and peace. Shared values, trust, and mutual respect continue to make this relationship an enduring pillar of regional security and development,” Dodik said.
The proposed resolution states that more than one million Americans of Serbian descent live in the United States. However, Nikola Lončar, president of the Tesla Science Foundation in Philadelphia, argued that some estimates place the number at more than six million, including approximately 6,000 scientists, professors, and other highly qualified professionals.
Lončar said the Serbian-American community has significant potential to strengthen ties between the two countries but stressed that greater organisation and engagement are needed, particularly as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding.
If adopted, the resolution would make February an annual celebration of Serbian-American history, achievements, heritage, and the longstanding friendship between Serbia and the United States.
