The outcome of the parliamentary elections in Hungary has come as a surprise to many, including observers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, said BiH Ambassador to Hungary Biljana Gutić Bjelica.
“We knew from the polls that both Tisza and Fidesz were alternating in the lead, but very few expected such a margin,” Gutić Bjelica said in an interview for RTRS’ morning program.
She noted that around six million Hungarians voted, exceeding expectations for voter turnout.
According to her, the election outcome is likely to bring changes in Hungary’s foreign policy, as well as social shifts.
“The two candidates had diametrically opposed programs. Hungarians voted in this way for cooperation with Brussels and for all the support measures that Brussels has allocated to Ukraine,” she explained.
Gutić Bjelica added that potential EU membership for Ukraine could affect multiple sectors, particularly agriculture and industry, which are of key importance for Hungary.
According to preliminary results from the National Election Commission, based on 97.35 percent of processed votes, the opposition Tisza party won 138 out of 199 parliamentary seats, while the ruling Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán secured 55 seats.
Of those, Tisza won 93 seats through direct candidate elections and 45 via the party list system.
