In Kozarska Dubica presented “The war for the Serb language and orthography”

In Kozarska Dubica, International Mother Language Day was marked with the presentation of the work “The war for the Serb language and orthography”.

A return to Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and his student Đuro Daničić reaffirmed Vuk’s idea of introducing the vernacular language into literature and highlighted the importance of nurturing language and script as the identity of the Serb people.

“The story of Đuro Daničić was told, of his fate as an undoubtedly great philologist, but this book, this collection, also touches on certain identity-related issues of the Serb language that are important in our time,” said Duško Pevulja, professor at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Banja Luka.

The marking of Mother Language Day was joined by the Kozarska Dubica branch of the Serb Educational and Cultural Society Prosvjeta, which is engaged in publishing.

“Last year we printed seven books and helped finance the printing of two more. ‘Pamtimo’ by Mira Lolić Močević and this book by Đuro Daničić were printed together with the Serb Center from Banja Luka. That is how we work every year. This year we already have three books planned,” said Zoran Sinkić from Prosvjeta in Dubica.

Libraries are guardians of the written word, preserving language and presenting literature and a culture of expression.

“In a time when identity is often called into question, because the mother tongue is not just a means of communication, libraries are guardians. This is the foundation of our cultural and national identity, and when we say that there is a struggle for language, it is in fact a struggle for the right to be who we are,” emphasized Danijela Mandić, director of the Kozarska Dubica Public Library.

The literary evening was enriched by sixth-grade students of the “Sveti Sava” Primary School from Kozarska Dubica.
