“Silence protects you, history remembers” — song dedicated to Republika Srpska Day

On the occasion of Republika Srpska Day, Zoran Vorkapić wrote the song “Silence protects you, history remembers,” performed by Antonio Popović.

“Our Republika, gentle light,
proud image of our ancestors.
Let our tricolor burn with pride—
silence protects you, history remembers,”
are the verses of this patriotic song dedicated to January 9.

Vorkapić said the inspiration came from his love for Republika Srpska.

Popović noted that the song is not only patriotic but also a song of love, that it offends no one, and that it promotes the most beautiful values.

January 9 is marked as Republika Srpska Day because on that date in 1992 it was established under its original name, the Republic of the Serb People in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Republika Srpska was founded by Serb deputies in the then Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina after they were outvoted on key issues concerning the survival of Yugoslavia, while representatives of the other two peoples moved toward secession against the will of the Serbs, who had the status of a constituent people.

The name Republic of the Serb People in Bosnia and Herzegovina was used until February 28, 1992, when the first Constitution was proclaimed and the name was changed to Serb Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. That name remained in use until August 12, 1992, when it was replaced by Serb Republic. In September 1992, it was changed to its current name — Republika Srpska.

“Živjeće ognjište” (“The hearth will live on”) is the slogan under which Republika Srpska Day, January 9, is marked this year.
