Constitutional law professor Siniša Karan says that the celebration of 25 November represents an abuse of a historical date with the intention of undermining the Dayton Agreement.
Karan stressed that by marking this date, political Sarajevo is directly denying the Dayton Agreement, disregarding Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Dayton-based internal structure, the equality of its peoples, and the status of Republika Srpska.
“Because of such actions by the Bosniak political elite, BiH has been trapped in thirty years of constitutional and political chaos. They persistently attempt to create an artificial continuity of BiH, even though the Socialist Republic of BiH ceased to exist and a new Dayton BiH was established, composed of Republika Srpska, the Federation of BiH, and three constituent peoples,” Karan stated on the social network X.
According to him, this is not only a question of continuity, but a broader process aimed at creating a unitary and civic BiH in which only the majority population would make decisions.
By doing so, he noted, they are attempting to deny the rights of the Serb people and reduce a constituent people to a minority.
“Dayton BiH is a new constitutional structure. It is a federal state in which all three peoples and both entities are equal. In the imagined unitary state that celebrates 25 November, the peoples are not equal and the entities do not exist,” Karan said.
A civic state, Karan emphasized, would automatically turn the Serb people into a minority.
“One of the ways they are trying to achieve this is through the celebration of 25 November,” he stated.
The former ZAVNOBiH Day, 25 November, is marked as the so-called Statehood Day in the Bosniak-majority part of the Federation of BiH, while Croats do not observe it as a holiday.
