Novel “Sužanj” by Lidija Žarić presented in Višegrad

The novel “Sužanj” by author Lidija Žarić was presented at the Cultural Center “Ivo Andrić” in Višegrad, in an event organized by the Serbian Cultural and Educational Society “Prosvjeta.”

Through the character of its main heroine, the novel offers a universal portrayal of family suffering caused by ideological divisions, while also providing a vivid depiction of human relationships, customs, and ways of life in the Trebava region from the 1920s to the first decade of the 21st century, participants at the event emphasized.

“It portrays a difficult, tragic life — one that symbolizes everything our people endured before, during, and after World War II, all the way to the years following the most recent Homeland War. Many details in this book have never been mentioned, not only in literature but even in history. I feel that, as my friends say, I have repaid my homeland by preserving its history from oblivion,” said Žarić.

Reviewer Slavica Gostimirović noted that Žarić “captures, through a single human destiny, the experience of all of us in tragic moments — of which there have been many throughout history,” adding that the novel remains as a lasting memory of a historical time and its spirit.
