Merz states there will be no EU enlargement to the Balkans until internal decision-making is resolved

“We are facing a situation where German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he will not allow the EU to expand to Balkan countries until Europe resolves its most important internal issues—one of which is how decisions are made within the EU,” said the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik.

“They believe the concept of consensus should be replaced by the concept of majority rule. Some countries oppose this. Does this mean the EU will survive afterward? It will survive—perhaps in a reduced form—but it will survive. Should we stop pursuing the EU path because of this? No, we should not. But that doesn’t mean we should blindly follow the policies coming from Brussels,” Dodik said.

The President of Srpska emphasized that Hungary is the best example of this.

“Hungary was willing to pay the price for its values. It upholds a traditional and state-centered political approach. The traditional family is seen as the foundation of Hungarian society, and we share that perspective. Not everything can be imposed automatically, and that is something important for us and for our future planning,” Dodik concluded.
