Ilić: Bećirović and Lagumdžija’s position is regrettable

Serbia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Radomir Ilić, has criticized BiH Presidency Chairman Denis Bećirović and BiH Ambassador to the UN Zlatko Lagumdžija for promoting what he described as a one-sided political approach to internal issues in BiH while making accusations against neighboring countries.

Speaking during a United Nations Security Council session, Ilić expressed regret that both officials continued to pursue similar political positions at a time when Serbia and BiH were entering a new political cycle.

His remarks came in response to Lagumdžija’s address to the Security Council, during which the BiH ambassador referred to alleged crimes committed by Serbs and criticized what he called the outgoing government represented by Ilić.

Ilić warns against one-sided political agendas

Ilić emphasized that the beginning of a new political cycle in Serbia and BiH could create opportunities for renewed cooperation based on shared interests and mutual understanding.

He expressed hope that political developments would encourage a more constructive approach to relations between the two countries.

“Continuing to push one-sided agendas is unlikely to produce a different outcome. Instead, it will only deepen existing divisions and mistrust in the future, particularly when inflammatory language such as we heard here today is used,” Ilić stated.

He argued that political disagreements should be addressed through dialogue rather than accusations and confrontational rhetoric.

Democratic legitimacy of elected representatives must be respected

Addressing constitutional disagreements within BiH, Ilić stressed that such issues cannot be resolved by rejecting the democratic legitimacy of elected political representatives.

He called for a new political approach based on cooperation, institutional responsibility and mutual respect.

“We need the courage and vision to build a new political approach, which was demonstrated here today and which we believe is useful and helpful,” Ilić said.

According to him, such an approach could contribute to overcoming existing political disagreements and would be more productive than deepening internal divisions.

Serbia calls for a more constructive political period in BiH

Ilić expressed confidence that BiH has an opportunity to enter a more constructive period of political cooperation.

He voiced hope that all political actors in BiH would recognize and use that opportunity to improve dialogue and address outstanding issues.

Following Ilić’s remarks, Lagumdžija acknowledged that both Serbia and BiH were entering a new political cycle.

The Security Council session concluded after a brief response from Lagumdžija, who wished Ilić success in the new political period.
