Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina are facing a major attack on their right to self-determination, former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich said during an appearance on the 13th & Park podcast.
“I work for the Government of Republika Srpska. Republika Srpska is the Serbian part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. What is happening there is the same thing that happened to Donald Trump here in America and the same thing that happened to me in Illinois. Their president, Milorad Dodik, was convicted for something that was not a crime, by an unelected high representative from Germany,” Blagojevich said.
He recalled that the system of government in Bosnia and Herzegovina was established by the United States through the Dayton Peace Agreement in 1995.
“Nobody knows anything about it, but this is a massive attack on the Serbian people’s right to self-determination, their right to elect their leaders, and President Dodik’s right to serve his people without being criminalized for celebrating January 9—Republika Srpska Day and its autonomous status,” Blagojevich said.
He also referred to the celebration of St. Stephen, a Christian saint and the patron saint of Republika Srpska, claiming that this had been criminalized because, as he put it, the “Bosnian federation” is controlled by a Muslim government with strong ties to Iran.
Blagojevich stressed that he has nothing against Muslims and that everyone has the right to choose and practice their own religion.
“But the infection of radical Islam in that place, which is undermining democracy against the Serbian people there, the Serbian Christian Orthodox people—that is part of my destiny, I think. Why? Because my grandparents on my mother’s side—my mother was born in America—came from that part of what was then Yugoslavia, from Bosnia and Herzegovina, back in the early 20th century,” Blagojevich said.
“What brought me there, I think, is more of a divine thing than something I deliberately expected,” he concluded.
