Republika Srpska officials attend reception marking 250 years of US independence

A reception marking 250 years of the independence of the United States was held this evening at the US Embassy in Sarajevo, attended, among others, by Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željka Cvijanović and Republika Srpska Prime Minister Savo Minić.

Several ministers in the Republika Srpska Government were also present, along with SNSD organisational secretary Igor Dodik.

Also attending were Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers Borjana Krišto, Deputy Defence Minister in the Council of Ministers Aleksandar Goganović, as well as leaders of several political parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Those gathered were addressed by John Ginkel, Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who said that the partnership between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States is lasting and successful, and that the values being celebrated this evening were hard won and courageously defended, the US Embassy said in a statement.

“No one will hand you freedom. It is built, generation after generation, by people who believe it is worth the effort. None of us can ever take our freedoms and our democratic institutions for granted. Each of us has an obligation to defend those freedoms for the generation to come,” Ginkel said.

The reception also featured a performance by the Military Band of the Maryland National Guard.
