Republika Srpska continues to attract an increasing number of domestic and foreign tourists each year thanks to its rich natural heritage, mountains, spas, cultural and historical landmarks, and diverse tourism offer.
According to Sanela Šimun, spokesperson for the Tourist Organization of Republika Srpska, approximately 145,000 tourists visited Republika Srpska during the first four months of this year, generating around 380,000 overnight stays, which is about 10 percent more than during the same period last year.
- The largest share of visitors comes from abroad, particularly from Turkey, Germany, Italy, and countries in the region. We offer mountain destinations, spas, and numerous other attractions – Šimun said on RTRS’s morning programme.
Republika Srpska offers a wide variety of tourist destinations.
- Jahorina, Kozara, Ravna Planina, and Igrišta are particularly attractive to tourists, especially those from neighbouring countries. In addition to winter activities, our mountain centres also offer summer attractions. There are cycling and hiking trails, and we must retain visitors and motivate them to return – she said.
According to Šimun, tourists are increasingly looking for active holidays in nature.
- Rural households are becoming more popular because, for visitors from distant countries, our way of life is something unique and attractive – she explained.
Tourism events also play an important role, particularly in Banja Luka.
- Rafting events are a major promotional tool for Republika Srpska. Visitors often stay for around 15 days and use the opportunity to explore other parts of Republika Srpska. Moto Fest also generated significant tourist traffic in the city. These events are very important both for Banja Luka and for Republika Srpska as a whole – Šimun noted.
She stressed that event tourism should continue to be a key focus.
- Many underdeveloped municipalities in Republika Srpska should turn towards rural tourism because it is one of our strongest assets. We also need to educate people about the opportunities this sector offers and help revive rural communities. We should embrace our traditions and cultural heritage rather than move away from them – she said.
Šimun also expressed hope that the relevant ministry will once again approve the use of tourism vouchers this year.
- Our phones constantly ring with inquiries from citizens asking about tourism vouchers – she added.
