Anđelković: Geopolitical pragmatism and the courage of Republika Srpska

The strong relations between Republika Srpska and Russia, which are almost allied in nature, demonstrate the geopolitical pragmatism of the authorities in Banja Luka and the courage to invest in the future through the right strategic moves, political analyst Dragomir Anđelković told Srna.

Commenting on the participation of the Republika Srpska delegation, led by SNSD President Milorad Dodik, at the International Security Forum in Moscow, Anđelković said that Republika Srpska has traditionally maintained good relations with Russia and that these ties are not merely partnerships, but are close to an alliance.

“What is very important for the Serbian people as a whole, not only for Republika Srpska, is the fact that Republika Srpska and Dodik personally have shown great courage in cooperating with Russia in areas where others are afraid to do so,” Anđelković said.

According to him, Dodik’s participation in the Security Forum carries particular significance and represents an investment in the Serbian future, because it sends a message to Russia that Republika Srpska stands by Moscow even in difficult moments, at a time when Russia faces isolation from a number of countries over various issues. He added that once the conflict in Ukraine ends, Russia is expected to have even greater influence in the region.

Anđelković especially emphasized the importance of the fact that Banja Luka has managed to significantly improve relations with the United States while simultaneously maintaining strong ties with Russia.

As he explained, this has geopolitical logic because both Russia and the United States are positioned around the concept of sovereignty and, despite certain disagreements between them, understand Banja Luka’s desire to preserve the national identity and statehood of the Serbian people by ensuring that Republika Srpska remains truly free, both internally and externally, rather than under anyone’s geopolitical protectorate.

“Russia and the United States understand this ideologically, and Banja Luka found a way to achieve something very few others could — to improve relations with both powers and to draw maximum benefit from those relations for its national interests,” Anđelković concluded.
