Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations in the Council of Ministers Staša Košarac said that evidence had been submitted to the relevant bodies showing that Croatia is violating the Espoo Convention and the Aarhus Convention in the case of Trgovska Gora.
“We used the arguments and clearly forwarded to the competent bodies our position and evidence of violations of the conventions. We continue forward,” Košarac wrote on X.
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which serves as the contact point for the Aarhus Convention on behalf of Bosnia and Herzegovina, informed the Convention’s Compliance Committee that Croatia had violated the Aarhus Convention regarding the planned establishment of a radioactive waste storage facility at Trgovska Gora near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The ministry sent the notification through the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations in the Council of Ministers.
A recommendation was requested from the Committee regarding Croatia’s compliance with the Aarhus Convention, which guarantees citizens the right to access information, participate in decision-making and obtain judicial protection in environmental matters.
Croatia plans to store radioactive waste from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, as well as existing institutional waste, at the Trgovska Gora site in the municipality of Dvor, directly on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
