Polyanskiy: Crisis caused by decisions of the illegitimate High Representative

The United Nations Security Council held closed-door consultations at the request of the Russian Federation regarding the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina—specifically the verdict against the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, issued by the Court of BiH.

Dmitry Polyanskiy, Deputy Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, stated that the Security Council discussed problems that, in his words, “could become hot” if no action is taken.

Polyanskiy reiterated that the root of the crisis lies in the actions of the illegitimate High Representative, whom he referred to as “Mr. Schmidt.”

“He is not recognized by Republika Srpska and was not confirmed by the UN Security Council. This is a long-standing issue. We had warned that some of his actions could potentially lead to a major problem. That is exactly what is happening now. The trial against the President of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, is a threat to the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Polyanskiy.

“We decided to draw the attention of Security Council members to this unfortunate development,” he added.

He hinted that the matter may be raised again during the next UN Security Council session.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) of BiH issued a decision terminating the mandate of Milorad Dodik, who was elected president in the 2022 general elections. The decision is subject to appeal.

The CEC’s move followed the confirmation of a first-instance verdict by the Court of BiH, sentencing Dodik to one year in prison and six years of disqualification from political office for “failing to comply with the decisions of Christian Schmidt.”
