Sanctions are a disgraceful act, defending Srpska has no alternative

Željko Budimir, Minister for Scientific and Technological Development and Higher Education of Republika Srpska, described the sanctions imposed on Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Staša Košarac and other individuals as a disgraceful act. He emphasized that these measures will only strengthen the resolve of elected officials to defend the interests of Republika Srpska, noting that sanctions remain the sole tool of the outgoing U.S. administration.

“This is disgraceful. Imposing sanctions on a minister in the Council of Ministers who has consistently acted in accordance with the Constitution and laws, and who has defended the interests of Republika Srpska, is unacceptable. I believe this will only reinforce Minister Košarac and others in their commitment to truth, justice, and Republika Srpska, which has no alternative,” Budimir stated.

He predicted that similar actions could follow before the Biden administration ends in January, viewing these sanctions as an attempt to undermine those advocating for a stable and strong Republika Srpska.

“This was expected from parts of Biden’s administration, led in Bosnia by Ambassador Michael Murphy. Until the very last moments of their term, they will try to inflict harm on Republika Srpska and its leaders who work to protect its interests,” Budimir added.

He expressed hope for a different approach starting in January, when such methods are unlikely to target a people or their democratically elected representatives.

“Following the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, I expect a different stance, particularly regarding the policy of sanctioning high-ranking officials of Republika Srpska and individuals responsible for upholding the Constitution and laws,” Budimir concluded.

The U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions on Minister Staša Košarac, Mirko Dobrić, Aleksandar Dobrić, and Vlatko Vukotić, citing their connections to Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik.

The list of sanctioned entities includes “Nimbus Innovations,” “Vorto,” “Best Service,” and “Green Apple,” as stated on the official X account of the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
