Safety of Returnees remains a matter of special attention

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska, Siniša Karan, stated regarding the events registered in Gacko on May 2nd, where a window of a returnee’s house was damaged, that the members of the Ministry of the Interior of Republika Srpska, in accordance with their competencies, are taking all necessary measures and actions to clarify it.

“Our task is to ensure favorable security conditions in the territory of Republika Srpska because the Ministry of the Interior guarantees security to all citizens of Republika Srpska, regardless of their nationality,” emphasized Karan.

He highlighted that the safety of returnees is a matter of special concern for the police, and the majority of attacks on returnees in the territory of Republika Srpska have been elucidated.

“I emphasize that in a small number of cases, it was about inciting hatred, or religiously motivated attacks, such as writing offensive graffiti on the premises of the Kozarac Local Community,” Karan emphasized.

According to him, the majority of these attacks were committed out of greed, as evidenced by the case of robbery committed against one returnee family in March last year in the village of Omeragići.

“Also, in the case from Zvornik, which occurred in September last year, when two individuals attacked a Bosniak, which was later revealed to have occurred due to ‘intolerance’ in traffic. After clarifying the arson of a passenger car in the vicinity of a mosque in Teslić, when a person of Bosniak nationality was identified as the perpetrator, as it was determined not to be a religiously motivated attack, most federal media did not report on this,” Karan pointed out.

Karan stated that it is shameful that representatives of the international community and institutions from Sarajevo present their assessments and conclusions, prejudging the motives and outcomes of the investigation into the Gacko case.

“This speaks of plain politicking and once again attempting to destabilize BiH,” emphasized Karan.

He reminded all “concerned individuals” that similar statements were made in 2008 when a mosque burned down in Gacko on the eve of Eid, later determined to have been caused by a heater left on that night, not by a Serb, as claimed then.

He emphasized that such attacks are exploited for political purposes, which benefits no one, neither the victims nor the police agencies working on the investigations.

“We call on everyone to engage in constructive dialogue to contribute to the status of all citizens, including the returning population, about whom they allegedly express concern,” Karan said.

Regarding the existence of information about an alleged gathering in Potocari tomorrow, he mentioned that everyone must adhere to legal regulations, and those who do not will be sanctioned.

“The members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will take all measures and actions to preserve the security of all its citizens,” Karan concluded.
