Russian Embassy: Russia always finds the strength to defend its homeland’s independence

Historical experience convincingly demonstrates that, when faced with difficult challenges, the peoples of Russia have always found the strength to unite, defend their homeland’s independence and ensure its continued development, the Russian Embassy in BiH told SRNA on the occasion of National Unity Day, celebrated on November 4.

The Embassy emphasized that Russia’s strength lies in the unity of its peoples, respect for their cultural traditions, shared historical memory and determination to defend their country’s sovereignty and future.

“We are convinced that, even today, the solidarity of Russia’s multinational society, commitment to shared spiritual and moral values, and responsibility for the destiny of the homeland remain the foundation for overcoming all challenges,” the diplomatic mission stated.

National Unity Day commemorates historic defense of Russian independence

The Russian Embassy explained that National Unity Day symbolizes patriotism, solidarity and devotion to the homeland, recalling the historical events that gave rise to the holiday.

“This holiday reminds us of the heroic chapters of Russian history, when representatives of different nationalities, social groups and religious communities united to defend their native land and preserve its independence and statehood,” the Embassy stated.

The historical origins of the holiday date back to 1612, when a people’s militia led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky liberated Moscow from Polish invaders, paving the way for the end of the Time of Troubles and the restoration of the country’s independence.

According to the Embassy, at a decisive moment in Russia’s history, national unity and the people’s readiness to defend their homeland’s freedom and sovereignty made a crucial contribution to victory over the enemy.

“There is a certain historical irony in the fact that some European capitals, which recklessly attempted to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia through the Kyiv regime, are increasingly facing severe crises, internal divisions and unrest, the causes of which can be found solely in their own irresponsible policies,” the Embassy stated.

Putin declares 2026 the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia

The Embassy noted that National Unity Day holds particular significance in 2026, which Russian President Vladimir Putin designated by decree as the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia.

The purpose of this initiative, according to the Embassy, is to highlight Russia’s distinctive character as a country where representatives of numerous nationalities, cultures and religions have lived and worked together for centuries, preserving their individual identities while maintaining a shared sense of belonging to one homeland.

“Russia’s multinational unity is not merely a historical legacy but also one of the most important foundations of our statehood, strength and prosperity,” the Embassy stated.

The diplomatic mission emphasized that Russia’s peoples are united by a common history, traditional spiritual and moral values, respect for cultural and religious diversity, and shared responsibility for the country’s present and future.

Remembering the Soviet people’s struggle against Nazism

The Embassy described the Soviet people’s achievements during the Great Patriotic War as one of the clearest examples of national unity.

During the war, representatives of different nationalities fought side by side against Nazism, defended their country’s freedom and liberated the peoples of Europe, the Embassy recalled.

In this context, the diplomatic mission highlighted the establishment of a new commemorative day in Russia: the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People Committed by the Nazis and Their Accomplices.

The day was officially commemorated for the first time on April 19, 2026, honoring the memory of millions of Soviet civilians who fell victim to Nazi policies of extermination.

“The Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People represents our moral obligation to the generation of victors and serves as a reminder that the revival of misanthropic ideologies must never be permitted,” the Russian Embassy in BiH stated.

The Embassy emphasized that preserving historical truth about Nazi crimes, opposing attempts to justify those crimes and resisting efforts to revise the outcome of the Second World War remain among the Russian Federation’s and Russian society’s most important responsibilities.

Embassy: State Duma elections demonstrated national unity

The Russian Embassy also referred to the elections for deputies to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, held in September 2026, describing them as further evidence of the unity of Russia’s peoples.

“The election results demonstrated the patriotic consolidation of society and citizens’ support for the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin, aimed at strengthening state sovereignty, ensuring national security and protecting Russia’s interests,” the Embassy stated.

In its response to SRNA, the diplomatic mission emphasized that the patriotic position of Russian citizens carries particular significance amid what it described as a hybrid war being waged against Russia by the collective West.

According to the Embassy, Western countries are attempting to undermine Russian sovereignty, weaken its statehood and create divisions within Russian society.

National unity remains the foundation of Russia’s sovereignty

The Russian diplomatic mission concluded that national unity remains essential to protecting the country’s interests and preserving its independent path of development.

Just as four centuries ago, when the people’s militia led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky liberated Moscow from foreign invaders, the unity of Russia’s peoples continues to serve as a fundamental pillar in defending national interests and ensuring the country’s independent development, the Embassy emphasized.
