Borac Banja Luka suffer 2–1 defeat against Panathinaikos in Athens

Borac Banja Luka opened their UEFA Conference League group-stage campaign with a 2–1 defeat against Panathinaikos in Athens.

Despite the loss, the Banja Luka side delivered a respectable performance and created several opportunities against the Greek hosts, who also had chances to extend their lead.

The match was largely shaped by a dramatic opening ten minutes, during which Panathinaikos were awarded two penalties following VAR reviews.

Two early penalties put Borac under pressure

Hungarian referee Bence Csonka pointed to the penalty spot twice in the opening stages of the match.

In the third minute, Borac goalkeeper Jurkas produced an excellent save to deny Taborda from the spot.

However, just a few minutes later, the home side were awarded another penalty. This time, Cyriel Dessers converted to give Panathinaikos a 1–0 lead.

The Greek side continued to create opportunities, but Borac also threatened in the first half.

Savić tested the Panathinaikos goalkeeper, who made a comfortable save, while Saničanin came close with a header that narrowly missed the post.

Kangwa doubles the lead before Jojić responds

Panathinaikos looked more dangerous after the break and doubled their advantage in the 70th minute.

Andiano set up Kings Kangwa, who found the net from approximately ten meters to make it 2–0.

Borac refused to surrender and responded just ten minutes later.

Following a cutback from Luka Juričić, Miloš Jojić struck from 18 meters to reduce the deficit to 2–1 and give the visitors hope of a late comeback.

However, Panathinaikos held on to secure all three points.

Fan clashes reported before the match

The build-up to the match was overshadowed by clashes between supporters on the streets of Athens.

According to reports, 11 supporters from Banja Luka were detained following the incidents.
