Just weeks before the Republika Srpska delegation’s visit to Russia, Serb member of the BiH Presidency Željka Cvijanović met with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles in Washington.
Speaking to RTRS, former Illinois Governor and Donald Trump associate Rod Blagojevich commented on the significance of Republika Srpska officials maintaining contacts with major international actors, pointing to what he described as a new dynamic in relations with Washington, Moscow and Tel Aviv.
“This is the brilliance of the diplomacy being conducted by Milorad Dodik and his people,” Blagojevich said.
He described the approach as an extraordinary diplomatic achievement, particularly given the size of Republika Srpska compared with the countries whose leaders and officials Dodik has engaged.
“You have the United States, the most powerful country in the world. You have Russia, which, along with China, is among the most powerful countries in the world. And then you have Israel, which has an exceptionally strong and powerful alliance with the United States,” Blagojevich said.
“When I look at the diplomacy President Dodik is conducting with the Trump administration, with Putin in Russia and with Netanyahu in Israel, it truly represents the reestablishment and return to what I see as the natural alliance of the Serb people with the United States and Russia, as existed during both world wars,” he added.
Blagojevich said this was, in his view, the essence of the current diplomatic developments.
He argued that this relationship had been disrupted by policies pursued by successive U.S. administrations.
“That relationship was broken because of misguided and poorly conceived policies of President Clinton’s Democratic administration, followed by the Bush, Obama and Biden administrations, which I have spoken about before,” Blagojevich said.
He described the current developments as a return to what he believes U.S. policy toward the Serb people should have been during the 1990s.
“This is a return to how things should have been in the 1990s — with the United States supporting the Serb people during the breakup of Yugoslavia rather than being an enemy of the Serb people. What President Dodik has managed to accomplish is truly not only extraordinary, but historically significant,” Blagojevich concluded.
