In cooperation with the Museum of Herzegovina in Trebinje, the Museum of Semberija will host the ceremonial opening of an exhibition dedicated to Jovan Dučić and his vision of Trebinje as a center of culture and art on Saturday, September 19, at noon.
The exhibition, titled To My Beloved Trebinje – Following the Path of a Vision, presents part of the rich artistic legacy that Dučić donated to his hometown, including works of art, objects and other materials documenting the life and vision of a man who wanted to transform Trebinje into a true “city of culture.”
Jovan Dučić was much more than a poet. He was a diplomat, writer, collector, cultural figure and a man with a distinctive vision.
Living and working throughout Europe, Dučić spent decades building an art collection that he intended to leave to his native Trebinje. He collected works and objects representing different periods and cultures, ranging from ancient art to works by artists of his own time.
He began putting his vision into practice as early as 1934, when he donated a monument to Njegoš to Trebinje, along with the Sokol flag, the Golden Book of Trebinje and other valuable gifts. The following year, he sent a significant part of his collection of antiquities from Rome.
Today, Dučić’s legacy remains an important testament to his vision of giving his hometown a cultural heritage that would permanently enrich it.
The exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museum of Herzegovina in Trebinje, offers visitors an opportunity to discover part of that vision and learn more about a man whose gift to Trebinje amounted to far more than a collection of works of art.
It tells a story about the return of art to one’s homeland, an individual’s relationship with his hometown, and the idea that culture can shape the identity of a place.
The Museum of Semberija invites residents of Bijeljina and the wider Semberija region to visit the exhibition through October 16, 2026, and follow the path of Jovan Dučić’s remarkable vision.
