The president of the Democratic People’s Alliance (DNS), Nenad Nešić, has described Croatian Defence Minister Ivan Anušić’s statement that he regretted not taking part in Operation Storm as inhumane, uncivilised and lacking basic human compassion.
“Only someone devoid of humanity could say they regret not participating in the expulsion of 250,000 people and the killing of 1,869 others, including 550 women. These people were living in their own homes on ancestral land. It is disturbing that, 31 years after what we consider the largest ethnic cleansing in Europe since the Second World War, the crime is still celebrated as a victory, without any respect for the victims,” Nešić said.
He argued that if all Croats had been expelled from Serbia and a Serbian defence minister had made a similar statement, the international reaction would have been severe.
“The mildest consequence would have been sanctions and isolation, accompanied by lectures on human rights. Croatia, on the other hand, was rewarded with membership in the European Union,” Nešić stated.
He added that Anušić’s remarks should serve as a reminder to the Serbian people that, wherever they live, they should remain united.
“There must be no divisions or internal conflicts among us. The Serbian people must remain united if they are to have a future,” Nešić concluded.
