A commemorative gathering was held in the village of Komić, near Udbina, in memory of the Serbian civilians who were killed or went missing following the military operation Operation Storm. Among those who shared their testimony was Milan Sunajko, whose parents were among the victims.
According to the Serbian National Council (SNV), eight Serbian civilians from Komić and the surrounding villages were killed or disappeared on 12 August 1995. To date, no one has been held accountable for these crimes, and no indictments have been filed.
“Everyone who decided to stay was killed. My father’s body was found, but my mother’s remains have never been recovered,” Sunajko said.
He explained that his father was killed near the home of a neighbour, while his mother set out towards the village of Mazin, where she had relatives.
“My father was killed near Gojko’s house, while my mother headed towards Mazin. She was killed there, but whether she was ever buried remains a major question,” he added.
The commemoration took place in a village that is now abandoned. During the ceremony, this year’s Statement of Remembrance, dedicated to the victims who perished during and after Operation Storm, was also read.
