Tadić: the PIC has brought itself to humiliation, the UN Security Council should take control

After humiliating the United Nations Security Council five years ago by allowing Christian Schmidt to assume the role of High Representative without the Council’s approval, the so-called Peace Implementation Council has now, through the same misguided policy, brought itself to humiliation and a loss of authority, lawyer Ognjen Tadić told Srna.

He pointed out that this is a situation in which the UN Security Council, for the sake of peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina, should once again take control by making a decision on the future of the High Representative’s office and by adopting a decision that would halt the anti-Dayton actions of the so-called Peace Implementation Council.

  • Neither the Dayton Peace Agreement, nor any of us in Bosnia and Herzegovina, nor the restoration of the authority and reputation of the UN Security Council can be helped by anyone else, nor can the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina be brought back into compliance with the Dayton Agreement, unless the Security Council itself acts as soon as possible – Tadić stressed.

Returning the issue of appointing the High Representative to the UN Security Council, Tadić said, is the only way to restore authority and legitimacy.

  • After all, it is also the most effective way to prevent the conflict between Trump’s policy and the defeated Biden policy, which after its defeat in the United States found refuge in certain European governments, from continuing within the so-called Peace Implementation Council. Instead, decisions regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina should be made in the UN Security Council, where the legitimacy of current American policy can be expressed to a greater extent – Tadić stated.

Political directors of the member states of the Steering Board of the PIC failed to reach a consensus during a two-day meeting in Sarajevo regarding a candidate for High Representative, although such a decision is not within their formal authority. The matter was postponed until the end of the month.

During the two-day discussions, two candidates emerged as the leading contenders: Italian diplomat Antonio Zanardi Landi, proposed by Italy with the support of the United States, and French diplomat René Troccaz, proposed by France with the support of Germany and the United Kingdom, according to media reports from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
