SNSD leader Milorad Dodik stated that Republika Srpska must work on additionally strengthening relations with the new US administration, which, according to him, views the world differently and acts from a realist rather than a globalist perspective.
“Our people are constantly on flights across the Atlantic. A few days ago I was in Chicago, then in Moscow, and now I am going to Russia again, followed by a visit to a European country,” Dodik said.
He recalled that US President Donald Trump, in his first moves, announced that America would no longer build states and nations, while also shutting down USAID programs and distancing from George Soros-linked structures.
“While we supported that approach, Sarajevo politicians campaigned for Kamala Harris, as did Christian Schmidt himself. When we explained our situation in ten minutes to one of the five most powerful people in the United States, he asked us how we had remained normal. Under previous administrations, we could not even dream of such conversations,” Dodik told Politika.
Commenting on the frequent visits of Serb member of the BiH Presidency Željka Cvijanović to the United States, Dodik said that some visits remain outside public attention.
“We are trying to accomplish additional things. We are dealing with matters important for Republika Srpska, especially regarding its international position. There are gains, but also some losses, such as the outcome related to our friend Viktor Orbán, which affected us. By the end of the year Republika Srpska will send its own ambassador to the UN,” Dodik stated.
Referring to statements from the US State Department that Christian Schmidt’s announced departure “comes at the right time,” while Schmidt reportedly plans decisions regarding property issues by the end of the year, Dodik reiterated that Republika Srpska rejects the concept of so-called state property.
“That issue was resolved in the Dayton Agreement — property belongs to the entities. We will not become tenants in Republika Srpska, nor will they succeed in imposing anything. If they move in that direction, I will advocate for our parliament to adopt a decision on the independence of Republika Srpska. Any country would react the same way if its constitution and internationally guaranteed autonomy were attacked,” Dodik concluded.
