Vučić announces construction of memorial center in Donja Gradina

Aleksandar Vučić announced that Serbia will participate in financing, together with Republika Srpska, a major memorial center dedicated to the victims of Donja Gradina.

Speaking at the Day of Remembrance ceremony in Donja Gradina, Vučić recalled a pledge he made last year that Serbia would build a memorial complex at the site.

He said he would personally hold weekly meetings until the project begins and stressed that Serbia is prepared to finance the construction with its own funds, with additional participation from Republika Srpska.

Vučić said the future memorial center would be open to everyone and intended as a place where visitors can learn about what he described as some of the most monstrous crimes committed during the Second World War.

He also said visitors from Serbia are currently unable to freely visit Jasenovac Memorial Site and lay wreaths there.

Referring to Nikolaj Velimirović and Bertolt Brecht, Vučić warned that hatred is again rising across Europe, including antisemitism.

He emphasized that such hatred would never find fertile ground in Serbia or Republika Srpska, adding that Serbia has historically maintained good relations with Jewish communities.

Vučić thanked representatives of the United States, Russia, and Israel for attending the commemoration.

He concluded by saying Serbia and Republika Srpska will oppose silence about Jasenovac concentration camp and preserve remembrance through education, memorial culture, and future generations.
